This transmission is an 01M out of a 2002 VW Jetta TDI. When it was pulled from the car, only reverse worked. As I have little desire to rebuild this transmission (the engine was transplanted into a different car), I am taking the opportunity to disassemble said transmission to examine how it works, and how it failed.
Specs:
01M
-4 Speed Automatic Transmission
-All 4 forward gears can be mechanically powered independent of torque converter slip
Began the teardown process. Drained fluid (which smelled burnt), removed transmission pan, removed filter, removed valvebody, removed transmission input shaft, outer clutchpack assembly, and inner clutchpack assemblies. The outer clutch pack (sat on top, actuated by outer input shaft) appeared in good condition, with no evidence of clutch degradation or burning.
-Bell housing and input shaft.
-The dark steel casting carries the outer input shaft and outer clutch pack
-Input shafts from clutch packs to planetary gearset
